Where Was The Burrito Invented?

At High Tide Taco Bar, while our specialty may be tacos, that is not the only food item this restaurant in Farmingdale can provide for our customers. If you’re looking to switch things up, we recommended trying one of our delicious burritos. They can be enjoyed at any time of the day and have you feeling full and satisfied in no time. As one of the most popular Tex-Mex dishes, you’ll be doing your taste buds a disservice by missing out on them.

Origins Of The Burrito

There are many different theories as to where burritos got their name from. The word “burro” in Spanish means donkey, and “burrito,” the diminutive form of the word means little donkey. One legend that is likely false is that burrito comes from a man named Juan Menendez in Chihuahua, Mexico. The story goes that Juan sold food out of a cart pulled by a donkey. He used flour tortillas to keep the food warm, and this way of serving food grew in popularity in the early 1900s. Whether or not this is true is anyone’s guess, but what is certain is that the burritos serviced in our restaurant in Farmingdale are second to none.

The First U.S. Burrito

While they had been served in Mexico before this, the first burrito listed on a U.S. menu came from the Los Angeles Restaurant El Cholo Spanish Café in 1930. Since then, burritos have done nothing but grow in popularity. That is why our restaurant in Farmingdale has decided to offer them.
